As a writer, I always hear about how an author should have a great hook; a way to grab your reader from the beginning and never let go. Although Verity is a romance of sorts, it had a first sentence that hooked me so hard I was not going to stop until I found out what happened.
Lowen Ashleigh is an out of work writer whose money from her previous books is dwindling after a many months of not writing anything new. Her career had stopped while she helped her mother die on hospice. After her mother’s death she meets with her agent and a publisher. She’s offered a unique opportunity of finishing a series for a beloved fiction writer, Verity Crawford, who has had a terrible accident after supposedly trying deal with the grief of losing her twin daughters.
As Lowen considers the offer, she is losing her home because she cannot afford to pay the rent. This forces her to move into the home of Verity and Jeffrey Crawford and that’s when the creepiness starts.
After finding a manuscript of Verity’s autobiography, Lowen begins to read frightening revelations in a version of events that echo Verity’s own unique writing style.
As she gets further into the manuscript, she realizes that Verity may not be what she seems. All of this happens as Lowen and Verity’s husband, Jeffery develop feelings for each other and start to explore the chemistry they have.
I have heard this is not a typical Collen Hoover story, so I will have to read more of her books to get a real feel for her writing. But this book was excellent. It was a great romantic suspense novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it even though there were moments when I was glad I was not reading it at home, alone.
I am confidant you will enjoy Verity. As a runner up to the Goodreads Best Books of 2019, many people felt Verity was thoroughly entertaining.
