Book Review – Under Ontario Skies

Under Ontario Skies

Sweet, Refreshing, Slow burn

Presley Jones has had enough heartache in her life, so when the new guy starts taking an interest in her, she’s guarded.  She’s positive Deon Martinez is a player and wants nothing to do with him, other than looking at his beautiful features from afar.  When fate places them together we learn about Deon’s past, why he is looking for a new start. I loved watching their relationship unfold.

YA readers will love this story between these two sweethearts. The backstory for Presley and Deon is well crafted and brings tonal color to the story.  Presley is very relatable, and I found myself aching for her as she deals with her loss. The side characters of Presley’s best friend, Maddy and Deon’s little sister, Bree, are a delight and provide the perfect harmony.

Special thanks to Chiara Malwana for letting me read “Under Ontario Skies” as an ARC.  Be aware, this book does end on a cliffhanger, but it’s totally worth it. This is an excellent debut and a terrific kick-off to a new series!

Chiara Malwana has a hit on her hands!

Book Review – Queen Move

Kennedy Ryan writes stories that are deep and multi-layered.  I recognize some may think her stories are a little controversial, but I find her characters’ voices are clear and authentic in her books.  Queen Move is no different. I waited almost a year for this book, and I have to say it was worth it..

I met Kimba like a lot of people when I read Ryan’s, All the King’s Men Duet.  In it, Kennedy portrayed Kimba as a strong, formidable woman who lives life on her own terms and takes no prisoners.  She is loyal and ethical yet compassionate to her best friend, Lennix.  In Queen Move she is still all those things and more.  We get to know her from the time when she was a child to present day. Her stamina, drive and enthusiasm for being the change she wants to see in the world, is inspiring.  It is also what draws Ezra Stern to her as well. In Queen Move, both characters know each other from the time they are babies while their parents are the best of friends. Ezra and Kimba grow up across the street from one another and are each other’s best friend. And then at 14- share their first kiss together.  It’s lovely that Kennedy Ryan shares their upbringing and childhood years because it adds so much context for the reader.  Although I love a good bodice ripping, like the next girl, I found the beginning chapters showed an innocence and understanding for the two main characters we are rooting for. Kimba is true and strong in spirit (hence her middle name – Truth) going after everything she wants and not settling. Ezra is more open and flexible with a hardworking, noble ethic.  Both know who they are and what they will and will not tolerate. But over the course of their second chance together, they discover secrets about their families they could have never imagined.

Throughout the book, what seems like an impossible, messy, and complicated turn of events is what holds them together as they remember the pact, they made to each other as children.  I have heard Kennedy Ryan’s books referred to as rich tapestries.  They are. The description is apropos.  I saw colors of gold and bronze mixed with iridescent violet and magentas finishing in bright red with a cascade of chestnut curls. And that was just Kimba’s clothes and appearance.  Kennedy pays close attention to describing the environment and setting the scene for the reader which adds richness and texture of the story like a beautiful woven garment.  Queen Move is a journey of empowerment and coming back to what you know is right and helped mold you into what you are now. I loved it and my wish is that you do too.

How does Author, Harloe Rae select her character names in Left for Wild?

This week Harloe Rae released her new book, Left for Wild. I am thrilled she took a moment to sit down with me to discuss her writing process and how her author friends bless her life and make her a better writer. Check out the interview below.

Harloe, I’m so excited about your book, Left for Wild. I’ve purchased my copy already and I’m digging into it.  I LOVE the survival tips – very clever. Let’s get started.

MS:  What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

HR: Writing is my second job. I still have a day job, so that impacts my ability to bust out words whenever the mood strikes. I wish I could say that my schedule is super smooth and efficient on a daily basis. That is definitely not the case. I release three books a year and tend to follow a pretty consistent schedule of writing each day for a few months, take a month off, and start the next book. When I’m on a deadline, I write each day and keep track of my word counts to keep myself accountable.

MS: What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

HR: I love this question because friends in this industry are so vital. I’ve been blessed with some incredible friendships and I feel extremely fortunate for that. K.k. Allen, Heather M. Orgeron, LK Farlow, Leigh Shen, Ava Harrison, Parker S. Huntington, AM Hargrove, Michelle Heard, Tia Louise, Ace Gray, Nicole French, and I could go on. They all know who they are! The greatest things these ladies do for me is to provide encouragement, advice, and inspiration. They’re all extremely talented and crazy amazing and incredibly selfless.

MS: What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?

HR: This is another really great question. I’m going to go with The Unwanted Wife by Natasha Anders. Pretty sure a lot of people have read it, but they don’t love it on the level that I believe they should. That counts as under-appreciated, right? 🙂

MS: It absolutely does! Let’s talk more about your process. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

HR: Google is a good friend, right? I can sit on the internet doing searches or watching videos for hours. I tend to research prior to starting a novel, but also during the process depending on the scene. I find a lot of inspiration in pictures as well.

MS: You always have the greatest names for your characters. How do you select the names of your characters?

HR: Baby name websites are amazing!

MS: Wow, I can’t believe we are almost done. Tell us, what are the hardest scenes to write?

HR: I love the really intense, overly emotional scene, but they’re also very complex and take a lot more out of me to get typed out.

MS: Harloe, thank you so much for taking the time to connect with us here.  Do you have anything else you want to share? Where can readers find you to learn more about you and check out some of your other books?
HR: Thank you, Molly.  Yes!  I want to invite all your readers to join my NEW RELEASE GIVEAWAY!  It’s worth $100 and includes a paperback copy of Left for Wild and a $50 Amazon Gift card!  Just go to https://harloe-rae.blog/giveaway/left-for-wild-is-live-giveaway/  to enter!

Arrested. Wrongfully accused. Sentenced to ten years.
But the steel bars release me early.

After serving half of my time for a crime I didn’t commit, they grant me parole—with a very short leash. My second chance at freedom begins now, and I won’t waste it. I should’ve been paying more attention.

Ambushed. Captured. Stranded.
When I wake in the depths of a snowy forest, all seems lost. I’ve been left alone in the wilderness with zero means of escape. Until someone rouses beside me.

I recognize Blakely Cross instantly, yet she’s barely more than a stranger. Now she’s stuck with me in the worst place imaginable, as collateral damage.

Cope. Adapt. Persevere.
Blakely blames me, and rightfully so. This entire situation is my fault. Our destinies are inadvertently twisted together by efforts beyond our control. Because of my past, we’re being forced to depend on each other to stay alive.

The bond we’re building will overcome the harshest conditions.
But there are more unexpected challenges waiting for us.

Book Review – Make Me Bad, by R.S. Grey

Madison Hart is a children’s librarian who is suddenly held at gunpoint on her walk home from work on her 25th birthday (she had wished for more excitement when she blew out her candle).  Her hero, Ben Rosenberg, chases off her attacker and comes to her aid just after being released from jail for starting a brawl in a bar on the wrong side of town.

After these two meet, sparks fly between them but neither acts on it until Ben is sentenced to community service where he unknowingly chooses the library which drops him right in Madison’s lap.

She recognizes with his newly minted rap sheet; Ben is just the right person to “make her bad”. As she proposes this arrangement, he is reluctant. To make sure he complies, she tells him he must agree, or he can do his community service elsewhere.  As he considers, Madison is overtaken by the spicy smell of Ben, its intoxicating. In addition to beautiful features and his jaw that could cut granite, she self discloses she is still a virgin and would like to address that too.  Ben is floored. What does that mean?  Is she looking at him to help her with that, and if so, in what way exactly?

I have never read RS Grey before but Make Me Bad was fun and lighthearted. I LOVE R.S. Grey’s character development and the hysterical internal dialogue. It’s just the thing I needed as an escape from reality.

Chat with Denise Wells, Author of Pour Judgement

This week I have been very anxious. Tuesday night I thought we might have to evacuate our home. You may already know that Oregon is on fire with over 850,000 acres burned so far. Mr. Sloan and I live near the Santiam Canyon where the “Beechie Creek Fire” was blazing our way. As winds shifted Thursday and Friday, it seems we may be in the clear now, but our fire is trying to merge with two other fires along Western Oregon.  Aside from having packed all our necessities and stacking them in the living room, I needed to mentally escape for a little while in a good book.

I started reading Dirty Roxie by Denise Wells. It’s laugh out loud funny! Just the thing to lighten my mood. I reached out to Denise to compliment her on a great book and see if she’d be interested in an interview. She is a Pacific Northwest girl too, and when she found out I was in Salem, OR, immediately invited me and Mr. Sloan to evacuate to her home. I was beyond touched by her generosity.

I’ve included her latest book, Pour Judgement, and few others (including Dirty Roxie) below. I encourage you to check them out along with her interview.

Wherever you are, I hope you are safe and with your family. I’m not an old testament girl. I’m closer to the “wine and cheese” God myself, but I do believe the passage that says we are born for such a time as this. With everything that has happened this year, I gotta believe we must be made of hearty stock.

MS:  Hey Denise, thank you so much for joining me.  Let’s dive right in! As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

DW: I wanted to be Barbra Streisand. Or an elephant trainer.

MS: When did you write your first book and how old were you?
DW: I wrote my first short story at age six, but my first full-size book at twenty-seven.

MS:  What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
DW: I wish I had a really cool and inspirational story for this. But I don’t. If I’m honest it’s the first time I used the word “fuck” around my dad. I was ten years old, not wanting to sweep the floor was involved, and I will never forget the conflict on his face between wanting to be pissed and wanting to high-five.

MS:  What is your work schedule like when you’re writing, the number of hours?
DW: Right now I’m working two full-time “day” jobs and writing (long story), so I’ve had to scale back on my daily word count which has been really disappointing. But I try to set aside an hour before bed to make sure I get my word count in, If I’m under a deadline, that changes, and I usually don’t write during a release week.

MS:  How do you select the names of your characters?
DW: I have a spreadsheet filled with names I’ve come across either in real life or in fiction that I like. When I start to develop a character in my head and get a sense for who he or she is, I’ll then go to the spreadsheet to see which name fits them the best. Very rarely will I change a character’s name after that. I did once with a character, and I still refer to her as the original name sometimes in conversation and readers have no idea who I’m referring to.

MS: What one thing would you give up to become a better writer?
DW: It’s easier to answer with the things I would never give up! Part of me wants to say kiwi, because I don’t like it and never eat it anyway, but that feels like cheating. Does it have to hurt? Whatever I give up? Should I say my pinkie fingernail?

MS: How long on average does it take you to write a book?
DW:  NaNoWriMo has really kind of changed my life in that way. My first book took me two years to write. My second book took over a year. But then my first year doing NaNo, I wrote a book in less than two months. And that really screwed things up for me for a while. For me, I think my writing suffers if I rush it too much. And then my editor hates me and it becomes a big mess. I’ve settled into a better groove of late and can say from concept to release it takes
me about 5 months, but I work on multiple projects at a time.

MS: Hey, Thank you so much, Denise!  I am so glad we got a chance to connect.  Can you give me all the places where people can find you?
DW: Yes, I think I have included everything. Thank you so much, Molly. I love to connect with readers and have had a great time with you!

Denise's newest release - Pour Judgement

I’ve been preparing for this day for years. The biggest wine competition of my career. And I plan to win.

My wine? Sublime.
My presentation? On point.
My outfit? Hand-picked by my fabulous BFF with fantastic fashion sense.

Nothing has been left to chance—I’m ready to crush my competition. No pun intended.

The thing is, that judge over there? I’m pretty sure he’s the stranger whose bed I crawled out of this morning.

*Bonus* Main character, Morgan Anderson, has included her guide on Winemaking/Winetasting at the end of the book.

Book Review – Unpredictable by Jenna Hartley

Juliana is a 37-year-old wedding planner, working through the grief of losing her fiancé. There is no closure to his death. This unfortunately allows her to carry some false hope.  Upon meeting Harrison, 51, Juliana discovers feelings that stir in her that have been dormant for years.  What becomes a HOT encounter one night, gives way to an opportunity to explore more once they reconnect.

Harrison has his own hurts too.  Both are apprehensive about stepping into a relationship, but their chemistry is electric.  Both Harrison and Juliana have amazing friends they lean on to get advice and input.  I especially love the group of girlfriends, writer, Jenna Hartley, created with her Love in LA series.  These women are soul sisters who want the best for each other. Juliana’s friend, Alexis never enables her but lovingly tells her the truth while helping Juliana work through her grief.

My favorite line in this book that Harrison tells Juliana is, “I don’t want to be the man you use to run away. I want to be the man you run to.” This made me swoon and root for these two characters to come together.  It is inspiring how these two works through their struggles to find their way to each other.  Juliana being a wedding planner makes her story even more heart wrenching.  And yet, Harrison has family he has to deal with. But his daughter, Olivia is hoping her Dad will find happiness like she has with her fiancé.

This age gap romance is so perfect it will keep you up at night flipping the pages long past your bedtime.  Jenna Hartley has what it takes to take you on a mental journey that is completely satisfying.  I have no doubt you will agree.  5 STARS!!
